 Monsoon rain: NDMA forecasts urban flooding in Punjab, KP

A monsoon spell likely to lash different cities from July 17-21

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday issued an alert and declared Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country as vulnerable to flash floods from monsoon rains.

Monsoon rains and thundershowers, as predicted by the NDMA's Emergencies Operation Centre, will be hitting Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad along with KP & central/ northeastern Punjab from July 17 to 21sporadic breaks which may induce flash flooding/municipal flooding.

The new spell of rains comes on the heels of The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said in a statement issued Monday that all four provinces including AJK and Gilgit Baltistan regions are likely to face fresh spells of rain-wind with thundershowers under the impending weather system.

Besides, the NDMA stated that heavy falls had been predicted in Swat, Mingora, Battagram 50 Millimetres, Mardan 60mm Swabi 70mm Haripur 65mm Abbottabad 80mm Kashmir, Islamabad 100plus Rawalpindi 40-plus Chakwal, Jehlum, Kolkata Gujranwala and Sialkot in Monsoon Spell.

The body has also instructed all departments to take necessary precautions in view of the likelihood of flooding and extreme weather, expressing concern about chances that strong winds might reach 60-70 km/hr/max unsafe level wind gusts or lightning could be found.

On the other hand, It has been warned to general public that they should be very careful during rains and not go out in bad weather as well maintain distance from powerline polls pstmt wires with precautions for safe guard their selves by avoiding electric shocks(sys)

The NDMA had on Monday warned of possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in mountainous areas of KP and GB as temperature rise was likely to bring heavy rains to the region.


GDMA and provincial Disaster Management Authority of KP have been instructed to get in touch with the metropolitan administration departments for necessary preparedness ford provision of immediate response.

In addition, departments have been directed to carry out their duties assigned to them so as to inform local communities / tourists / travelers about the areas which are susceptible. The warning comes after locals and tourists were warned not to make unnecessary journeys.
