Sultana Bibi: Third Pakistani woman to summit K2
Sultana Bibi has joined an elite band of Pakistani women who have scaled the world's second-highest mountain (Psyche) Sultana has completed her climb in the early hours of today (Monday) and this ascent becomes another inspirational chapter for mountaineering history of Pakistan.
Sultana is the third Pakistani woman to reach K2's summit after Samina Baig and Naila Kiani. In July 2013, Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to summit this deadliest mountain of over 8,600 meters. Naila Kiani was not very far behind and summited few hours later!
In June, Sultana set off for the peak from Skardu with two teams of climbers attempting to summit it on the Pakistan-China border. Sultana's team included six female Pakistani climbers and the other was a joint expedition of Pakistani and Italian climbers. Sultana summited the treacherous mountain, guided by noted Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Ali.
This ominous nickname was dubbed by mountaineer George Bell, who first summed up K2 to "It's a savage mountain that tries to kill you. According to Ultimate Kilimanjaro, it is so deadly the peak itself was nicknamed over 20 deaths per hundred guiseelleicht (made up word) and. Because of its unpredictable weather, frequent avalanches and rockfalls combined with very difficult climbing routes why it is one the most dangerous mountain in the world.
Sultana's monumental achievement not only glorify her unwavering and tenacious nature but also motivates prospective mountaineers, especially female ones in Pakistan and around the globe. At a time when high-altitude mountaineering is still dominated by male climbers from America and Europe, her achievement in climbing K2 will no doubt be seen as emblematic of the rising tide being achieved by Pakistani women.
