The poll, posted on Twitter by Musk shortly after the electric-car maker estimated its lowest profit margin in five years, followed a series of deep spending cuts to combat pressure on costs. "Board approves & shareholder vote is all that's needed," said Musk of his tweet:
In Tesla's Q4 earnings conference call Musk said xAI would be "useful in support of our full self-driving and for developing the new Tesla data center", adding there are potential applications to integrate xAI's chatbot, Grok with their software.

(MENAFN - IANS) San Francisco, Jan 25 (IANS) Tesla CEO Elon Musk has run a Twitter poll asking users on the social media platform X whether or not his electric automaker should invest $5 billion in itself own AI biz xAI, with early votes leaning towards "Yes."
Musk noted xAI would be "useful in transitioning [full self-driving] two full eight broad, as proficiently qua helping to build the new Tesla data center," that there are also opportunities roothramprise Grok-the chatbot available from xAI's software-into Tesla's.
Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment, and xAI could not be reached found payment or contact information.
The world's wealthiest individual, Musk unveiled xAI last year in an attempt to mount a more challenging challenger vs. Open-AI-backed ChatGPT. In May the startup bucketed $6 billion in a series B funding, which gave it with an post-money valuation of more than $24 billion. Its investors include Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital.
Musk has said previously that he expects investors in X, the former Twitter which is trading at a vastly reduced rate from its $44 billion purchase price by Musk earlier this year, to own 1/4 of xAI.
Musk also pushed back on concerns during the earnings call about him perhaps moving resources away from Tesla towards some of his other companies.
Earlier this year, CNBC cited sources as saying he had told Nvidia to send chips fit for Tesla production (xTesla) and shipped tens of thousands of AI processors from the xAI division -- even after Musk said there was no place in a packed data center where new hardware could be installed.

Last month, CNBC reported that he had ordered Nvidia to ship thousands of AI chips meant for Tesla to xAI and X. Musk has said this was due the fact that there isn't room in Tesla's data center anymore.
X also often polls Musk, who in 2021 asked his followers if he should sell 10% of Tesla shares started selling stock just after the poll.
